First New Year’s Day 5k in Norwood to Benefit Back on My Feet

The inaugural event in the racing series by Charles River Running will benefit Back on My Feet, the Boston non-profit that uses running to give homeless a second chance

Charles River Running and Winged Foot Running are introducing their Norwood racing series with the first annual Back on My Feet 5k and 1 Mile Run on New Year’s Day. Back on My Feet, a national non-profit organization that promotes the self-sufficiency of the homeless by first engaging them in running to build confidence, strength, and self-esteem, will serve as the race’s beneficiary with 100 percent of all proceeds going to the Boston chapter.

“Back on My Feet focuses on changing the direction of people’s lives by changing the way they see themselves,” says Charlotte Walsh, founding owner of Charles River Running. “Running with BoMF arms them with the social tools that they need to be able to succeed. This speaks volumes for me and I’m proud to be able to put on a first
class race to support this program. It’s the only New Year’s Day race in the area and we anticipate a great draw of runners from Norwood and the surrounding towns for this cause. The post-race pancake breakfast also won’t hurt.”

Back on My Feet does not provide food or shelter, but
instead provides a community that embraces equality, respect, discipline, teamwork, and leadership. Through dedication and hard work, Members earn the opportunity to create a new road for themselves by advancing to the “Next Steps” phase of the program where they gain access to education, job training, and employment opportunities, as well as financial aid.

The race, sponsored by Liberty Mutual and Accenture, begins at 10 a.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 572 Nichols Street, Norwood, Mass. Registration is now open for teams and individuals.
