Norwood Sons of Italy Award Scholarships

Norwood Italian Lodge #1235 Awards
Scholarships

The Norwood Italian Lodge
#1235, a local chapter of the Sons of Italy, recently held its Annual
Scholarship Awards Dinner on June 5, 2012, at BONCALDO’S Restaurant in Norwood. Lodge President,
George Franco, greeted members and guests.

Scholarship Chairwoman, Toni
Eosco, welcomed the nearly 70 members and guests in attendance. Mrs. Eosco
recognized lodge members, Barbara Campagna and Winnie Carfagno, for their
volunteer work on the scholarship committee. Scholarship award presentations
took place immediately following a delicious dinner.

Through the fundraising
efforts of its lodge members, and with additional donations to the scholarship
fund made in memory of past longtime lodge member, Ann Rizzo, two scholarships
in the amount of $1,000 were awarded to college-bound students. Winnie Carfagno,
made the first presentation to Julia Bilotta, a graduate of Medway High School.
Julia is the daughter of  Frank and Joan
Bilotta, as well as the granddaughter of  lodge members  Frank and Barbara Bilotta.  Julia will pursue a chemical engineering major
at Northeastern University.

Barbara Campagna, presented
the second award to David Nethercote, a graduate of Bishop Feehan High School,
son of  William and Lucille Nethercote
and grandson of lodge members, Leon and Mary Niro. David intends to pursue a
chemistry major at UMass-Amherst. The Lodge congratulated both recipients and
wished them good luck with their future plans.

Following the awards, Toni
Eosco introduced guest speaker, Mrs. Jennifer Fraone. Mrs. Fraone, daughter of
lodge members, Phyllis & George Sabatini, and past local and Grand Lodge
scholarship winner in 1987, delivered inspiring remarks to the current
scholarship winners and guests. Mrs. Fraone is the Assistant Director for the Center of Work
and Family at Boston
College, Carroll School
of Management. She addressed the challenges of the workplace, choosing career
paths, caring for family, defining success, and the importance of taking time
to ‘pause’ and enjoy the ‘present’. Mrs. Fraone received enthusiastic applause
at the conclusion of her presentation.
