Hit and Run Leaves Bicyclist Hospitalized

A Norwood man will be charged in a hit and run on Washington St. Friday night.

A 40-year-old Norwood man will be charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident causing serious personal injury after hitting a bicyclist on Washington St. Friday night.

Norwood police officers responded to a report of a man hit by a vehicle on Washington St. at the corner of Granite just after 9:00 p.m.

"On arrival the officers found a man with serious injuries," a police statement reads. "His bicycle had extensive damage and was in the road nearby. The man, who is a local physician, was taken by ambulance to Norwood Hospital and then transferred to a Boston Hospital where he is currently in stable condition."

The vehicle that struck the bicyclist had fled the scene. On Saturday morning a Norwood resident came to the police station and reported he had struck something with this car the night before. Officers found extensive damage to the right front of the vehicle and to the windshield. As a result, police are able to charge the offending party, whose name wasn't given as there was no arrest.

"These offenses are not arrestable, so the Norwood Police Department will apply for a criminal complaint at the Dedham District Court," police said. "The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time."

Since there are no arrestable offenses, the name is kept out of the police report.

why would the driver wait til the next morning to turn himself in? judging by the damage on his car, he must have known he hit something. waited to sober up?
