Meeting Planned to Address Questions on Norwood Hockey Rink

The Recreation in Norwood Committee will be holding an informational meeting about the proposed hockey rink at the Coakley Middle School on Oct. 1.

The Recreation in Norwood Committee will be holding an informational meeting at the Coakley Middle School on Monday, October 1, at 7 p.m. to provide information and to answer the public's questions about the skating facility proposed for construction in South Norwood.

Hosted by the South Norwood Committee, administrative representatives from the Norwood school system and general government will be on hand to help facilitate discussion.

In July state legislators approved $5.6 million in the state budget for the proposed Norwood rink.

“This is great news for Norwood families as well as the Commonwealth,” Rep. John Rogers said in a statement after the funds were approved. “The state will have an asset that it doesn’t have to maintain or manage; the town can manage the asset and collect the revenues it generates; the neighborhood will benefit from an economic surge; and our youth, seniors, and all of Norwood’s families will at long last have access to a home rink.”

When the proposal was brought before the Town Selectmen in June, the members were generally in favor of the concept, but voiced concerns about cost to the town for maintaining the rink, parking and the relocation of the tennis courts - since the location being considered would displace them.

"It's going to be a very positive thing for the town of Norwood," Selectmen Paul Bishop said.

So, we secure funding for a site never once mentioned in previous nauseating discussions, and then ask the residents affected what they think. This is an EXCELLENT example why people should be skeptical in re-electing Rogers - He obviously knows more than you, knows what is good for you and you are going to take it whether you like it or not. PERIOD.

The Norwood Nuggets Hockey Program needs a rink in Norwood. I'm sure the Norwood High School hockey program would love to have a rink in town as well for team practices and home games. This becomes a cost savings for both programs and a revenue generator for the town. All of those restaurants and businesses on Washington Street will likely see an upswing in their revenues as well due to people coming in from out of town for games, etc. The program needs home ice, just like all of the other sports have home fields in Norwood.

Thanks for the clarification. Makes sense....so long as there is a logical plan to keep traffic from getting out of hand. I'd like to hear that plan btw...
But beyond that...who's opposed to it?
