Miniature Howitzer Explodes at Historic Reenactment, Injures Actor

Previous reports that an actor had been shot were false.

An actor in Norwood's historical reenactment yesterday was struck in the leg by shrapnel from a replica gun that exploded, said a release from the Norwood Police Department issued today.

Police did not release the name of the 46-year-old Norfolk man, but said today that his injuries were non life-threatening.

At 6:03 p.m. on the Fourth of July, Norwood Police received a medical emergency call from the reenactment happening at Subway Hill. Residents in the area told Norwood Patch that one party was taken from the scene in an ambulance with a leg injury.

Initial reports that the actor had been shot were unfounded, police said today. Police spokesman Kevin Grasso said in the release: "It was reported last evening on Channel 7 that someone had been shot by live rounds during the Military Reanactment at Subway Hill."

"This did not happen," the report continued. "A replica miniature Howitzer gun exploded sending a broken piece into the thigh of one of the (reenactment) actors."

Officer Thomas Annino was at the location and assisted the injured party in what was originally believed to be a femoral artery injury. The victim was transported by the Norwood Fire Department to Norwood Hospital.
