Nine Arrested in Police Sobriety Checkpoint

Nine motorists were arrested between Friday night and early Saturday morning as the result of a police sobriety checkpoint on Route 1 in Norwood, Police said Monday.

The checkpoint was set up in the southbound lane of Route 1 by Norwood Police and Massachusetts State Police officers at 11:00 p.m. Friday, after gathering for a briefing at the Norwood Police Headquarters.

"Traffic was narrowed to a single lane and motorists were stopped momentarily," Norwood Police Chief William G. Brooks said in a statement Monday morning. "Those who showed signs they had been drinking were administered field sobriety tests in the ITT lot by state troopers and Norwood police officers. The operation was overseen by a State Police lieutenant with special training and the checkpoint was administered according to strict protocols approved by the Supreme Judicial Court."

The checkpoint ended at approximately 2:30 a.m.

During that time, six motorists were arrested for operating under the influence of liquor, one for operating under the influence of drugs, one for possession of Marijuana with the intent to distribute, and one for being unlicensed. Two passengers were also placed into protective custody.
