Visions for Vacancies: Filene's Basement

What should replace the SYMS/Filene's Basement on Route 1 and Access Rd.?

Drive around Norwood and you'll notice far too many empty storefronts and buildings.

This week, we're beginning a new series titled "Visions for Vacancies." We'll showcase an empty storefront and ask you what should take up the space.

This week, we ask you what should go in at the empty storefront on Route 1 and Access Rd. that was formerly SYMS/Filene's Basement?

Located at 560 Boston-Providence Turnpike near the airport and across the highway from the Land Rover dealership, Filene's Basement closed the start of this year after filing for banktruptcy in November 2011. Now the space is available for lease.

What do you think should go in the location? Another bargain spot? A grocery store or specialty market? A department store? Tell us in comments!

I think it should be the Ice skating rink! We don't need it in South Norwood! That is a perfect place!!!! Or put it where the old HQ was! But not where they want it!!!!

I think it would be great to get a Market Basket up in our area.

Isnt Target going into Sharon Commons?

Cheesecake Factory, Wegman's, Flea market / craft fair to occur every thursday - sunday. Maybe even move the farmers market there as well since there is so much parking available and it can be year round

I think Mr. Shekane's idea is fabulous ! Nearly anything other than yet another car dealership.

all the ideas are great..the only thing you need is the interest of one of these retailers to come into this area..thats where the town government comes into play..they need a serious program to bring large and small business into norwood..not give people a hard time like they gave Monkey Sports, etc..they should be grateful that anyone would want to come to this town, given its inbred small mindedness about growth and expansion. If the town could brush away the unfounded historic cobwebs, maybe they could accomplish tasks like this - it took a susan lewis to save the Norwood Theatre - where were all the rah rah rah Norwood flag waivers.

I'm not sure it's fair or necessary to use terms like inbred small mindness or rah-rah flag wavers. Perhaps you should run for public office David- it may expand your understanding of town decisions/perspectives.

How about an indoor soccer field, indoor pool, or an indoor sports plex that has b-ball, hockey, soccer all in one facility. We can have good ole uncle Ernie buy it and we'll name it after him. Yaaaa....that's it!!

Wegmans or Target, and I'm sorry, but I agree with David. Although his choice of words may be construed as harsh, I agree with what he's saying.

What do I know, though? I'm just another "carpetbagger."

The space probably isn't big enough for a Wegmans...not sure about a Target either...but great ideas. An indoor pool or sports complex sounds good too. How about an Aldi's or Trader Joe's? Something that will bring tax revenue into the town. Unlike the skating rink, which I heard may cost the town $400K a year. If true, that could be a big strain on the town which is already struggling to keep class sizes small and fund certain school programs like arts, music, etc. Unfortunately it seems that some in the town - both residents and selectmen/town meeting members - may not have thought this through entirely.

A Target would be nice. The ice skating rink could go there too!!! We don't need it in South Norwood, unless it comes with a stop light at Washington St and Mylod St.
