Weekend Planner: The Wedding Singer, Musical Events and Rummage Sale

Here's a look at the weekend ahead for May 4-6.

The weekend is just around the corner, and don't worry, Norwood Patch is here to assist you! Check out our list of suggestions of events to attend, places to go, sites to see – all within driving distance of home. 

1. Norwood High School Drama Presents: 'The Wedding Singer'

Where/When: , 245 Nichols St., Norwood; Friday, May 4, 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 5, 2 p.m.

Why Go: Norwood High School Drama will present the Broadway rendition of "The Wedding Singer." It’s 1985 and rock-star wannabe Robbie Heart, who still lives in his grandmother's basement, is New Jersey’s favorite wedding singer.  With a score that pays loving homage to the pop songs of the 1980s, The Wedding Singer takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room. Tickets will be available at the door.

2. First Baptist Church of Norwood Rummage and White Elephant Sale

Where/When: , 71 Bond St., Norwood; Friday, May 4, 7-9 p.m. and Saturday, May 5, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Why Go: A large assortment of women’s, men’s and children’s clothing in excellent condition will be for sale in the Parish House all at very reasonable prices. Other items, such as decorative and household, will also be on sale. On Saturday, all items will be on sale until 2 p.m. Then from 2–3 p.m., there will be a bag sale. All clothing that can fit into a 13 gallon bag will be sold for $5 a  bag. All clothing that will fit into a 30 gallon bag will be sold for $10 per bag. White elephant items will be sold for half price.

3. A Nights of POPS with Sharon Concert Band & Roy Scott Big Band

Where/When: , 60 Lenox St, Norwood; Sat., May 5, 7:30 p.m.

Why Go: The Sharon Concert Band and the Roy Scott Big Band, along with guest vocalist Ruth Debrot, celebrate spring with an annual Pops Concert featuring popular songs from the 1940s through today. The Sharon Concert Band will play upbeat selections such as “Highlights from Jersey Boys” and “Tijuana Brass In Concert” while the Roy Scott Big Band set list will include “Tenor Madness” and Miles Davis’ "Four." Vocalist Ruth Debrot will join the Roy Scott Big Band on numbers such as “The Look of Love” and “It Had Better Be Tonight,” as performed by Michael Bublé. A light fare will be included with the admission price and a cash bar will be available.

Pricing: $15 for adults, $8 for seniors and students

4. Emmanuel Lutheran Church Fireside Coffee House Music.

Where/When: , 24 Berwick St, Norwood; Sunday, May 6, 2 p.m.

Why Go: The fireside coffeehouse features acoustic music from a collection of    Boston-area musical duos and trios. The format is an open mike plus a  half hour feature from a selected duo or trio. This afternoon open mike will feature musical duos and trios featuring Ergo Canto (Paul Beck and Leslie Bryant). Refreshments will be provided.

Pricing: A $5 donation at the door goes to a church music fund. 

5. Parkway Concert Orchestra presents 'The Final Frontier'

Where/When: , 100 Winter St, Norwood; Sunday, May 6, 3 p.m.

Why Go: Music Director and Conductor Matthew Fritz has chosen a lively program including Mars and Jupiter from The Planets by Gustav Holst and selections from Superman, Return of the Jedi and Star Trek. The program features violinist Lucia Lin in Antonín Dvořák's Romance, Op. 11, and selections from Schindler’s List. The program is supported in part by a grant from the Norwood Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Pricing: Donation is $15; $10 for seniors and students; and free for children under 12 years old.
