YOUR TURN: Was Romney Right About the 47 Percent, or Will This Doom his Campaign?

Mother Jones released a video of Mitt Romney telling a private audience that 47 percent of Americans are dependent on the government and will never vote for him. Was this a ruinous gaffe, or has Romney told a hard political truth?

Mother Jones video of Mitt Romney describing nearly half of all Americans as "dependent on government, who believe that they are victims.''

A secret video obtained by Mother Jones magazine has rocked the political world.

In that video, Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney said 47 percent of Americans believe they are victims, are dependent on the government and will never vote for him. He went further, saying he wasn't worried about them. The magazine released a portion of the video Monday.

In a late night press conference Monday, Romney said the comments were not "elegantly stated," but were part of a larger conversation about the role of personal responsibility. Romney went on to say the comments were a reflection on "the political process of winning an election, and, of course, I want to help all Americans—all Americans—have a bright and prosperous future."

Mother Jones posted the full video just after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Do you think the video shows Romney's true feelings about half of the American electorate, or was this an out-of-context snippet? Will this hurt Romney's chances of willing the election, or is it one blip in a very long campaign? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

Most people already know who they are going to vote for on November 6th. This tape may hurt him and I don't like him but he is right and the truth hurts. I know many of the 47% are disabled or retired vets but many are also lazy freeloaders that don't ever want to work and they never will unless we stop giving them a free ride.

The 47 percent are not uniformly Democrats or Obama voters. More important, the 47 percent are not welfare queens -- people "dependent upon government," in Romney's words, "who believe that they are victims." Of the 47 percent who didn't pay income tax in 2009, more than 60 percent of them paid payroll taxes, because they had a job. 22 percent of them were old people. 190,000 of them were soldiers deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq that year.

Did it occur to you that Romney was actually counting his odds. He was not diminishing any one he was calling it what it is. Refute it. He would like to help those to achieve better however they want the safety net that disables them. He is honest and realistic and wants to create the jobs that will elevate them. If he is president he will get rid of the crippling regulations that will allow the creation of jobs. He has proven on past performances that he successfully turned around fiscal disasters and left balanced bugets. I live in fear when all the taxes start drowning us come January 1, if Obama stays in office. Obama misappropriates funds(our tax dollars) for one failure after another and now GM . He is destroying us as we now have gone from first place to seventh place in the world and got another financial down grade and a 16 trillion dollar debt. How will we feed every one as the economy diminishes and gas prices go up. The choice is ours to make. I know I do not want more of the same. I am worse off than I was 4 years ago.

I think politicians need to realize the camera is ALWAYS ON. That being said, I'd like to remind everyone of these comments by president obama:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTxXUufI3jA

Remember the bitter people in rural America clinging to their guns and religion, showing antipathy towards people not like them.

Remember that time Obama called his grandmother a "typical white person"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEd0Wg_QMrg&feature=related

Candidates say stupid things, even offensive things. The question comes down to who is going to do the best job getting this country back to work and back on the right track. Don't let some silly remarks get in the way of that. The point is both candidates make them. Don't let the left-leaning media let you believe otherwise.

Reality is that Romney is speaking the truth. The people receiving entitlements like EBT cards, medicaid and rent subsidies are probably not going to vote for Romney... it would not be to their perceived advantage.

Will the Carter video hurt Romney in the long run? I don't think so. Not any more than the Middle East fiasco will hurt Obama. People's minds are made up at this point... the undecideds are leaning in one direction or another, and it is just a matter of tallying it up. I don't even think the debates will make a difference because we see in the candidate of our choice what we want to see. I'll vote for Romney or any Republican no matter what they say or bungle, because much more inflation is not to my perceived advantage. And inflation is on the way in higher fuel costs and bread that costs $5 a loaf.

When politicians are at events they should always assume every word they say is being recorded and whatever they say is fair game for criticism. What baffles me is how Obama gets a pass on things he says when he knows he's being recorded, like the Egypt is not our Ally comment... that was an incredible gaffe that he got a complete pass on (as well as several others). How about the mishandling of the Egyptian Embassy comments about "Abusing the universal right of freedom of speech..."? It's obvious to everyone that the mainstream media will dig up every little obscure comment by Romney (i.e. the Olympics comment) but Obama never has had the same level of scrutiny on stuff he says on a daily basis.

The mainstream media is bought and paid for by Democrats. One way to kill that snake is to not vote for them... any of them.

The mainstream media rarely mentions anything that may reflect upon the left as was recently proven during the democratic convention yet a comment from the right gets twisted all out of proportion and is played like a boken record. Truth is seriously lacking and coverups are blatant e.g. the assassination of our ambassador. Oh for the days when integrity and honesty was a virtue most would strive for.,Now we wonder who can we trust?

Funny how a video of a May fundraiser comes to light just before a Letterman appearance. I suspect this is just the beginning. In all likelihood, there are many more to come. Some may even hit the target and seriously wound Romney/Ryan

By now, I am sure the Obama camp has amassed all kinds of tidbits they hope will fire up their base. These will be leaked in drips and drabs over the coming weeks. It will be the timing that counts. I hope the Romney camp is ready. I think he is handling this first grenade pretty well.

The Carter video might be a well-planned diversion or retaliation for the many anti-Obama media that's out there right now. Notably, the movie "Obama's America" which is playing in all theaters around here: Taunton, Swansea, N. Attleboro, Lincoln, RI, etc. etc. etc.. I haven't seen the movie, but I have seen the trailer and that's enough for me.

There are also a lot of books, one is "The Amateur" by Edward Klein. And there are plenty others. Amazon has a whole list of them about Obama, Michelle, Hillary Clinton, etc. etc.. I haven't read any of them, nor will I.

You don't hear too much about this stuff in Massachusetts, for obvious reasons.

I feel that Romney is not saying too much but I bet Obama is out of his mind trying to find out. You know darn well Obama will claim Romney's plans to be his. Romney is no fool and I bet he takes extra precautions against the Obama moles.

Half of the 47% are seniors collecting SS, etc. A good chuck of the rest are military personnel. There are also a few thousand folks in there who make more than $1 million a year. Many of the poor folks that are left come from republican leaning states. Somehow, Mittens has managed to insult supporters of both he and Obama AND be wrong on the facts....ALL AT THE SAME TIME!

For the record, I'm voting for Obama (again), but I'm not dependent on the state or fed government any more than Mittens is. I know it's easy to think all Obama supporters are dependent on the government. It might even sound good at a fundraiser. But if you believe it, you've got your head stuck in the sand.

O-nitwit and his followers are fundamentally changing this country, whether you believe it or not. His rhetoric is just that...rhetoric. He is a fantastic speaker, no question about that. You think he cares about the Middle Class? Try Obamacare. Contributions to SSI are going up 1%, Health costs are rising, Medicare cuts of $715 Billion will mean less service(he says it will become more efficient, less waste. If you believe govt can do that, you're nuts). Recent study shows 47% of Dr's are reaching burnout. Many will leave the profession, causing delays and missed dianosed problems, leading to more lawsuits & more rising costs. Obamacare hasn't fixed the problem, its created others.Mr Divider-In-Chief is slowly leading this country to ruination. This country will only suvive if a vast majority contribute. We're closer to 50 - 50 now. Once we reach that point, the demise begins, in earnest. Thank goodness I'm old and won't be around to see it.

Bert: Romney was strategizing before a group of wealthy supporters. Are you naive enough to believe that when Obama dines with ultra-liberal academia and Hollywood loyalists he is not divvying us up in the same way? It is the nature of the beast. In this "wired" world, we now get to see how "we the people" are chewed up and spit out by the political class. Just pick a side.

Joe: Have you contributed to SSI or a pension? Are you a Sr who has pd into Medicare his whole working career? Are you a retired Veteran who served his country? Any productive person, throughout their working career, are receiving benefits they payed for. These are people to be proud of. Yes, they may fall into the 47%. They are not the one's we're opposed to. We're opposed to those who want "freebies" at the expense of others sweat. So, Joe, which one are you?

When you find the $719 Billion that was reportedly "stolen" by the Obama administration to pay for Obamacare/Obamatax/Pelosi-Tax, fill us all in. And return the money to where it belongs in the first place.

So CNN is your credible source. Here is what the article that you linked to said: "The CBO says this money – Democrats call it savings, Republicans call it cuts – would be achieved mostly through cutbacks in payments to providers and by changes to payment rates in private Medicare plans". Translation: providers equals Doctors caring for Medicare patients. Changes to payment rates in private Medicare plans equals charging Medicare patients more for that supplemental insurance. THAT's where the $716 BILLION that was stolen (to use your words) went.

Romney was right about the 47% voting for their own self interest (OBAMA). Have you seen the 200/300 pounders pushing their baskets full of junk food & other non necessary items in Supermarkets, Walmarts & other stores & paying for it with E.B.T. cards? I'm sure they return home to their section 8 apartments/homes & wait for other entitlements/assistance to arrive in the mail. Why would they vote for ROMNEY and risk loosing their freebees? If someone is TRUELY disabled or in need, of course give them assistance, but there's so much fraud & abuse of the ENTITLEMENT SYSTEMS and everyone seems to know how to SCAM THE SYSTEM. I fear it's too far gone to correct now anyway!

The most amazing thing about this election cycle is the sheer number of people who are reporting that they regularly stand in line behind people in grocery stores and watch as well-dressed people get all their food for free by sliding their EBT cards through the machine, and then bring their bags out to their shiny new cars. It's pretty incredible, for years I have done most of my grocery shopping at the Hyde Park Shaw's and Price Rite (and when I'm in the area, the Chelsea Market Basket) and I have never once witnessed this phenomenon. In fact, usually when I'm behind someone who has food stamps or an EBT credit, they are dressed in Goodwill threads and own their own rolling cart to walk their groceries back to their apartment. Maybe all of these EBT cheats are shopping at Whole Foods, or maybe just the pie stores at the farmer's market.

To understand Romney's views about poverty, see Brigham Young University's "Attitudes about Poverty." http://eom.byu.edu/index.php/Poverty,_Attitudes_Toward The Mormons established an extensive Welfare Services program in 1935 that makes government programs unnecessary for Mormons. Utah, which is 60% Mormon, has the lowest childhood poverty rate in the country. But most of the country is not Mormon.

I am voting for Romney/Ryan as i believe in working for my money and that hard work and dedication will pay off. When we first moved to MA we were able to get MassHealth for our daughter (we paid for it still but got it, my husband and I did not qualify though) It was amazing, everything medical other than that monthly payment, was FREE. We thought, well, if my husband made a little less we could get a few things for free off the system.. Then we laughed neither of us could do it. We pride ourselves on hard work and earning our 'keep'. I am in favor of people that really need help getting it (for a period of time) and during that time we assist in training them on options for work. Then after a to be determined period its over. I heard a lot of HARSH but TRUE facts in that Romney video.. Time for people to wake up and take responsibility for themselves and their families.

This tape only confirms what informed people already knew! For Romney if you are poor, it is your fault and you are a drag on society. He has no use for the midddle class because they have nothing to offer him.
To Romney, people are expendable unless they are rich. It may as well be Donald Trump running, they are both arrogant and heartless!
