A political newcomer will face a long-time Massachusetts politician in the race to be the Bay State's next U.S. senator. The Associated Press has declared Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset and Democratic U.S. Congressman Edward Markey of Malden the winners of their U.S. Senate special primary elections, according to tweets from Fox 25. The call for Gomez came approximately one hour after the polls closed in the statewide primary while a call for Markey came moments later. Today there will be a special State Primary Election for Senator in Congress. The Democratic Party candidates that will be on the ballot are Stephen F. Lynch and Edward J. Markey. For the Republican Party, Gabriel E. Gomez, Michael J. Sullivan and Daniel B. Winslow will be on the ballot. Norwood voted for Scott Brown and owns more hybrid cars than the state average.
Norwood is green and red. That’s what we found when we compared data from the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles to the vote in the 2012 U.S. Senate race. You can see the results in the map above: Large circles suggest towns with more hybrid ownership per capita, and the red/blue color suggests which way those towns voted last year. In Norwood, 18.7 of every 1,000 vehicles is a hybrid, compared to the state average of 18. Patch’s research suggests the state has a good number of what might be called “green Republican” communities. More than 40 percent of the communities where Republican Scott Brown carried the vote have an above average numbers of hybrids. Candidates for U.S. Senate Democratic nomination squared off in Lowell Monday.
U.S. Congressmen Stephen Lynch and Edward Markey met in their second debate Monday ahead of the Democratic U.S. Senate special primary in a contest that contained few fireworks outside of an exchange on health care. The debate, held at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and sponsored by the college and the Boston Herald, lasted about 45 minutes and touched a wide variety of issues on which the two Democrats mostly agreed. An early question was asked about the candidates' positions on the Affordable Care Act. Markey (D-Malden) voted in favor of the bill that passed in 2010 while Lynch (D-South Boston) was one of few Democrats who opposed it. If you were planning to vote for the next U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, you need to be registered to vote by Wednesday, April 10, for the upcoming April 30 election. The April 30 election will select which candidate for U.S. Senate will represent Massachusetts in Washington, DC after John Kerry was selected as Secretary of State late last year. Voters in the First Suffolk Senatorial District will also choose to fill the vacant seat formerly held by Jack Hart will be held on the same date. According to Boston's Election Department, voters who have used absentee ballots in the past must fill out a new application each calendar year. The Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate meet in their second debate.
The combatants for the Democratic nomination in the U.S. Senate special election will square off Monday night in Lowell for their second debate leading up to the April 30 primary. Congressmen Edward Markey (D-Malden) and Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) will participate in the debate being held at 7:30 p.m. at Durgin Hall on the campus of the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The debate is being sponsored by UMass Lowell’s Center for Public Opinion and the Boston Herald. Questions for the debate will be posed by UMass Lowell students while the moderator will be reporter Jaclyn Cashman, according to the university. U.S. Rep. and Senate candidate Stephen Lynch (D-Boston) took aim at his party leaders for getting behind U.S. Rep. Edward Markey (D-Malden) in the primary fight, reported the Boston Herald. “They haven’t been fair,” Lynch told the Herald about the Democratic leaders. “No they haven’t been fair. I think they’ve done their best to discourage people from sending me contributions from Washington. They’ve basically said Markey’s our guy, don’t give to Lynch.” Lynch faces an uphill battle as the party bosses have backed the Malden Democrat. All districts have reported in and the seats have been filled for 2013.
The votes have been counted, and the contested race for Norwood's Constable have been decided. The one available seat on the Constable will be filled by current member James A. Perry. Perry received 70.93 percent of the votes in town with 688. Opponent Brian J. Graziano received 281 votes. Only 6.09 percent of Norwood voters turned out to vote in Monday's election.
