Norwood Youth Contributes to the Success of BC High Mock Trial Team

Joseph Karam of Norwood, a sophomore at Boston College High School, was a vital part of this year's most successful Mock Trial season ever. Competing against Boston Latin Academy, Boston Latin School, and Cathedral, the team went 4-1 this year, winning all three matches during the regular season, and winning its first playoff match against rival Boston Latin School, one of the best teams in the state.

The team lost in an extremely close match against the Winsor School, the reigning state champions, by one point in the regional championship, which determines who qualifies for the state tournament. BC High has never qualified for the state tournament, something the team hopes to change next year. Joe and his junior and sophomore team mates, hoping to build on their strong performance this year, are already looking forward to next year.

Each year, the teams competing in the Massachusetts Bar Association's Mock Trial competition receive a fictional case. The cases are either civil or criminal. This year the teams took on a civil case that dealt with the cause of Mr. John Jacob's tragic death. Mr. Jacob was a stunt pilot who had recently purchased a new plane, the Caborite Model 2, but while preforming his favorite trick, the Triple Lindy, the right wing of his plane sheared off and the plane crashed. Barry Jacob, John's son, sued Caborite for designing an unsafe plane. The case each year includes six witnesses who testify, three for defense and three for the plaintiff/prosecution. This year, Caborite was only found to be at fault once in the four trials at which BC High competed.
