10 Stories That Shook Norwood in 2012

It's that time again - time for Norwood Patch to take stock of the biggest news of the year. And so, the following are the most read stories of 2012:

Five Arrested on Heroin-Related Charges

In August, Norwood Police arrested five suspects for heroin-related charges following a search warrant executed on a Washington Street apartment. That search led to the search of another nearby residence and a vehicle that was stopped by plainclothes officers containing three more suspects.

Nine Arrested in Police Sobriety Checkpoint

The Massachusetts State Troopers and Norwood Police set up a sobriety checkpoint on Route 1 in Norwood in June of this year that resulted in nine arrests. Six motorists were arrested for operating under the influence of liquor, one for operating under the influence of drugs, one for possession of Marijuana with the intent to distribute, and one for being unlicensed. Two passengers were also placed into protective custody.

Two Seriously Injured When Struck by a Car in Downtown Norwood

In early March, Katie Brannelly and Dom Rossi were seriously injured when struck by a car in downtown Norwood. Friends and family gathered together at a benefit in April while the pair underwent continued rehabilitation and treatment.

Movie Starring Kate Winslet to be Filmed in Norwood

The Norwood Sport Center gained a new claim to fame in July, as one of the locations in the film "Labor Day" to be released in 2013. According to IMDB.com, the film stars Kate Winslet as depressed single mom Adele who with her son Henry offers a wounded, fearsome man a ride. As police search town for the escaped convict, the two gradually learn his true story as their options become increasingly limited.

Three Arrested for Alleged Heroin Possession, Distribution

The Norfolk County Police Anti-Crime (NORPAC) Unit was involved in many arrests in Norwood this year, including the arrests of three Norwood residents in April, all for possession or distribution of Heroin.

Man Struck and Killed by Commuter Rail Train Early Tuesday

A 27-year-old man was struck and killed on the Commuter Rail tracks in Norwood early on Tuesday morning in May of this year. The subject was struck by a train between the Windsor Gardens and Norwood Central Train Stations. The Transit and State police responded to the scene at about 12:30 a.m.

Person Struck and Killed by Train Thursday Morning

Another tragic accident occurred on the tracks in August when a tresspasser on the Commuter Rail tracks between the Islington and Norwood Depot train stations was struck and killed by an outbound train.The accident occurred just before 10 a.m. on the tracks past the Everett St. bridge in Norwood.

Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected in November, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. Obama won Massachusetts, taking 60 percent of the vote to Romney's 38 percent.

One Stabbed, One Beaten in Fight Outside Norwood McDonald's

Early one morning in May of this year, police responded to a hold up alarm at McDonald's Restaurant, 31 Boston-Providence Highway. Before police arrived on scene they learned that the alarm was triggered because of a disturbance that included a stabbing.

Three Arrested in Norwood for Trafficking in Opiates

Norwood Police arrested three males in June for allegedly trafficking in prescription narcotics, and confiscated several hundred pills with a street value of over $9,000. The suspects were arrested after plainclothes officers with the department's anti-crime unit, assigned to investigate the sale of drugs in areas known for high drug activity observed the subjects "acting in a suspicious manner."
