Controlling Outside Influences
Every parent worries about the outside influences on their child. From the neighborhood boy singing, “I’m sexy and I know it” to exposure to violent video games on a play date. Some influences we can control, but there are many we cannot.
The reality is that every child WILL be exposed to things counter to your family’s values. It’s the child’s reaction to those things that a parent can influence. The more alarmed and reactive a parent is, the more attractive the “outside influence” becomes.
Have ongoing communication with your child that’s open and honest. Let them know age appropriately what your feelings are and why. Empower them to make their own decisions and let them know that YOU have confidence in them and their choices.
