Home Business a Dream for Norwood Mom

Chrissy Gagliard shares her story of opening her own home-based preschool.

Chrissy Gagliard has worked with children all her life, but she said it’s now great to bring it all home. Gagliard, owner of Chrissy’s Little School in Norwood, said she’s been a camp counselor, a babysitter and a preschool teacher in her time. “I taught in Wellesley for ten years,” she said. “I started babysitting when I was 11 years old. From there, it’s just always been something I wanted to do. Kids are all I’ve ever known and it’s really been my world.” Gagliard said teaching young children educated her as much if not more than the kids. “I love their reactions to new things, the excitement in their hearts and eyes over something as simple as a bug or a rock,” she said. “You learn so much from a child that you wouldn’t know unless you…

Today the senior class of 2013 will walk across the stage and receive their high school diploma.

Norwood High School's Class of 2013 will graduate on today at 1 p.m. The outdoor ceremony will be on the stadium field and the indoor ceremony will be held in the gymnasium. The graduation ceremony will be broadcasted by NPA-TV on Norwood Light Broadband channel 22 and Verizon channel 34.

NHS Indoor Track Closes for the Summer

  Norwood High School announced on Friday that the indoor walking track will be closed for the summer starting on June 25. The track will re-open on September 4, 2013.

Norwood's St. Catherine School Preparing for 5K Fundraiser

The race is designed raise funds to supplement the school's budget.

The St. Catherine of Siena School 5K Road Race has helped supplement the school for over five years now, and this year is looking to be the best attended yet. “This is going to be a great year,” Race director Kathy Ekberg said. This year's race starts on June 1 at 5:30 p.m. Race day registration starts at 4 p.m. Ekberg said the race was originally started in 2008 during tough economic times to help the school connect with Norwood. “There was a bit of a disconnect at the time,” she said. “We thought we’d connect with the town of Norwood to promote a healthy environment.” The 5K race is designed for racers of all types, from walkers to runners, from the old to the young. “It’s very family oriented,” Ekberg said. “Any level, any age, we want …

Norwood Schools Making Strides in Full Curriculum Writing

Writing now a driving force in all facets of the curriculum.

The Norwood Public Schools are moving forward with implementation of the Common Core Standards, and right now assistant superintendent Alex Wyeth said overall literacy is the current goal right now. The teachers are 100 percent behind this initiative,” he said. “It’s essential to academic success across the content areas.” Wyeth added a good basis in writing would help students to achieve more in all curriculums, not just English Language Arts. “It’s for literacy and retention strategies across the curriculum,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of professional development in those areas, and that’s where we’re putting our chips, as it will have big carryover effects in all content areas.” Wyeth said from years 2012-2014, the schools are working to…

Norwood Public Schools Working to Launch New Website

The new site is expected to launch July 1.

Norwood Public Schools will be giving their district and school websites an overhaul this summer and they are currently seeking input from parents on what the new sites should feature. The survey, found here, asks what ways the new websites would be most helpful to them and their children. "We’re trying to integrate that into our design. So that parents, community members, students, family members and staff are able to find the information quickly and easily,” said Joe Kidd Director of Technology Services for the district. Kidd said they will be use a CMS (content management system) that will make it easier for faculty and staff to update the site more quickly. Threat of Winter Storm on Tuesday Postpones MCAS Testing

Due to the expected winter storm on Tuesday, the state announced that the MCAS English Language Arts Composition test for students in grades 4, 7 and 10 has been postponed until Monday, March 25.

  Since much of Massachusetts is expecting a winter storm on Tuesday, and with it the possibility of numerous school closings or delayed openings, the MCAS English Language Arts Composition test for students in grades 4, 7 and 10 has been postponed until Monday, March 25, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education announced on its website.  Originally this composition test was scheduled for Tuesday, March 19, but in an effort to make sure all schools administer the test on the same day, "all schools must administer the ELA Composition test to students in grades 4, 7, and 10 on Monday, March 25, including schools that are not affected by the weather," according to a memo from Elizabeth Davis, Associate Commissioner …
