A look at intrepid people from Norwood who put the town on the map.
Norwood has given its fair share of famous people, both in the music, art and sports’ worlds. Mighty Mighty Bosstones singer and Jimmy Kimmel Live announcer Dicky Barrett was born in Providence but was raised in Norwood. Barrett sang with MMB for eight studio albums, including Let’s Face It in which the band went platinum with their hit the Impression That I Get. American Ambassador to Uzbekistan Jon Purnell was also from Norwood. Purnell took the reigns in Uzbekistan after 9/11, at which time the country had taken a greater importance in the war on terror as it shared a border with Afgahnistan. The Warriors beat the Norwood Mustangs 3-1 to advance in the MIAA Division 1 South softball tournament.
Battling a strong program known for producing quality softball players, the Norwood Mustangs did everything they could against the King Philip Warriors. Playing with a young squad, the Mustangs kept it close but fell to King Philip 3-1 in the first round of the MIAA Division 1 South tournament. "The nice thing about this team is that there are five freshmen here and a couple of them started tonight for the first time," Norwood coach Carol Savino said. "We have a good future ahead of us." The Norwood High baseball team ended Xaverian attempt to win back-to-back state title with a 9-7 win Friday night at Balch Field in Norton. Rourke Flynn and Kenny Michael had two-run homers. Flynn ended up driving in four of the Mustangs' nine run. Norwood is now 17-4 on the season and will be hosting Dartmouth Monday night at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals. Norwood is No. 2 seed in the postseason, while Walpole is No. 1 at 17-3. The Rebels defeated North Attleboro, 7-4, Friday and will now Barnstable Monday at 4 p.m. at home. The Mustang girls' lacrosse team will be playing Frankin in the Division 1 South Tournament. The two teams will play Wednesday in Franklin at 4 p.m.
The Norwood High girls' lacrosse team will be playing at Franklin in the Division 1 South tournament, Wednesday, May 29, at 4 p.m. The Mustangs are the No. 13 seed in the tournament and will face Franklin, who is the fourth seed at 16-2. The Norwood High girls' lacrosse team fell a little short against Walpole.
GIRLS LACROSSE Norwood lost to Canton, 16-15, Monday. Shelia Carroll had a big day in net for the Mustangs with 11 saves, while Allison Ryan had eight goals and two assists. Brittany Sullivan and Kacie Smith added two goals apiece, while Smith also had three assists. Maura O'Neil, Sammy Hayes and Kelsey Colbert each had a goal. The Norwood High boys' and girls' tennis teams will be playing Foxborough this afternoon.
BOYS' LACROSSE: The Framingham High boys' lacrosse team beat Norwood, 10-9, dropping the Mustangs to 3-5 in the Bay State Conference and 3-11 overall. James Flynn nade 15 saves and was huge for the Mustangs in net, while Danny Farrell had three goals and an assist and Emmett McNamara, two goals and assist Framingham led at the half 4-0, and 7-5 going into the fourth. Norwood got off to another terrible start, tons of unforced errors, but they battled back in the second quarter with defense and got our offense going in the third, scoring five goals. The Mustangs took the lead with two minutes left, but Framingham scored with 25 seconds left and with eight seconds left to win the game. Norwood also lost to Wellesley, 16-4. Farrell …

Stephan Bottex of Norwood is a standout men's lacrosse player at Regis College.
The Regis College athletics department celebrated its annual awards banquet on Friday, April 27 in the Fine Arts center on campus. The department handed out 12 major awards during the ceremony to honor its athlete's accomplishments over the past year. Stephan Bottex of Norwood was selected as the Male Regis-Casserly Award Winner, an award that had previously been called the Casserly Award. Bottex graduates from Regis College with a degree in nursing and leaves as the men's lacrosse program's all-time leader in games (52), groundballs (218), face-off wins (210). Bottex was a four-year captain of the lacrosse team and was a 2013 All-NECC First Team selection. The senior was a two-year ambassador to the Team Impact program as well.

As a sophomore, Maloof is the career strikeout leader for the SNHU Penmen.
Norwood's own Ali Maloof was named Northeast-10 Conference Pitcher of the Year last week for her contributions on the Southern New Hampshire University softball team. Maloof was also named on the First-Team All-Conference. The pitcher has a 16-6 record the Penmen and has collected 207. The sophomore recently became the school's career strikeout leader after surpassing the 300 mark last week. She holds a 1.64 earned run average in the conference, while allowing just 46 runs in 157.2 innings pitched so far this season. Maloof has struck out more than 10 batters in 11 games this season, including a season-high 13 strikeouts twice.
