The Norwood 4th of July Parade Spectacular kicked off at around 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday, including a fire truck procession, antique and classic cars, a historic military reenactment, national and international marching bands, entertaining acts, floats and community groups. The annual 4th of July race in Norwood saw nearly 150 participants this year.
About 150 runners of all ages participated in the 2012 Norwood Firecracker 5K road race on Wednesday, starting and ending at the Town Common prior to the 4th of July parade. Finishing in first was Justin Lutz, 32, of Framingham, with a time of 15:09.1. The first Norwood resident to finish was Danilo Cordeiro, 30, with a time of 15:57.0. Parades, processions and a road race will most likely cause traffic delays tomorrow around town.
The Norwood Fourth of July Parade Spectacular will begin at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, with other festivities planned throughout the day. Here's what you need to know about road closings and traffic delays from the Norwood Police Department: The Parade starts at Coakley Middle School and ends at Shaw's Plaza on Nahatan Street. Washington Street and Nahatan Street will be closed for all traffic. Some roads that intersect with these two streets will also be closed by barricades or uniformed officers. It is expected that these two roads will be closed at 4:15 p.m. They will remain closed until the parade has safely passed. At 5:00 the Firecracker Road Race will start and finish at the Town Common. The Norwood Fire Department issued a release Monday urging local residents to "Be Smart... Leave the Fireworks to the Professionals." In 2010, the Norwood Fire Department was called to a structure fire in a shed caused by fireworks. The fire also ignited a nearby fence. Damages were estimated at $7,500. A similar fire occurred in nearby Canton, causing $4,600 worth of damage. According to a special study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), fireworks were involved in an estimated 9,600 injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms last year.
