Local Chicks with Sticks group hosts first all female floor hockey tournament at the Civic Center.
The Chicks with Sticks held a fundraiser tournament this past Friday, April 8, with eighteen teams, totaling 150 women ranging in ages from 21 -71, converging on the Civic Center gym for the event. The funds raised by the event are going to be put toward an outdoor court/rink being built at Coakley Middle School on the old track behind the baseball fields. Laurie Shea, who ran the tournament, pulled this together in a matter of weeks and said the event raised about $2,000. There was a lot of thought and creativity that went into team names and team shirts, some of the most creative including: the Mother Puckers (oldest average age of players with 1979 and earlier graduates, Babes with Balls, Slap Chix and the Hat Trixies. Laurie would …

Some reflections on the always busy, crazy way we live nowadays.
Saturday evening the Circle of Hope held its annual Luminary Night on the common. While driving home that evening, I found myself reflecting on the past week and just how truly blessed I am. I have a beautiful, happy and healthy son; my family is my core; and I live in a wonderful town. I should have felt more than simply content, but something I couldn't put my finger on was nagging at me. Life moves so fast, I realized, for all of us. Especially now that I am a parent I want life to slow down - for time to stand still so my son and I can bask in his childhood. Between sports, homework, grocery shopping, making time for family and friends it's easy to get caught up and forget the biggest thing - the promise we make to our children that we…

Norwood's interconnectedness is part of what makes the community - and the holidays - so enjoyable.
The holiday season is in full swing - Thanksgiving dinners have been enjoyed, Black Friday has come and gone and the Christmas lights are twinkling in Norwood Center. Amid the hustle and bustle between October and January, it can be easy lose sight of the seemingly little, but critical connections that make Norwood so special. Whether it be family and friends, neighbors or people whose names we don't even know (yet). This past Wednesday a friend of mine and I took our sons to Day Street Sports to pick up a floor hockey stick for one very excited little boy. This is the first season my son's friend has played a team sport and the excitement was evident. The boys bounded into Day Street Sports with pure enthusiasm and energy. Within seconds…

The women of Norwood hit the Civic every Wednesday for little friendly competition.
Visit the Norwood Civic Center on a Wednesday night and one finds the youth floor hockey teams filing out of the building - heading home for dinner and some homework. Nothing out of the ordinary, right? Then filing into the old, dimly lit gym are mothers, older daughters and wives - each with their own hockey stick securely in hand - making their way up the staircase that leads to a hockey haven. These women gather each week for a sense of liberation from their busy and hectic days. They are known as Chicks with Sticks, the all-female floor hockey group. Chicks with Sticks started out when Debbie Capodilupo, Janet Ryan and Kerry Reardon decided to organize a "mother's game" after watching their boys play street hockey. They started out by …
