Norwood Opens Cooling Centers to Residents

Four Norwood locations will be open to residents for heat relief until 8 p.m.

The Town of Norwood has opened cooling centers at the request of the state. All facilities are for Norwood residents only. No pets allowed. The following four locations are equipped to provide relief until 8 p.m.: The Norwood Senior Center - 275 Prospect Street Norwood Civic Center - 165 Nahatan Street Norwood Outdoor Swimming Pools - Hawes Pool (Washington Street at Short St.) and Fr. MacAleer's Playground (Vernon Street & Hawthorn St.) A National Weather Service heat advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. for the Norwood area. For tips on how to stay safe in the heat, click here.

Norwood Hospital Advises Residents to Stay Out of Heat

So far the hospital Emergency Department has not seen any increase in heat-related illness.

Despite temperatures in the mid- to high 90's Wednesday and Thursday, Norwood Hospital reported no increase in heat-related illnesses, but physicians still advised residents to stay out of the heat. “In general, the best advice we can give people during this heat wave is to stay out of the heat, as much as possible, keep hydrated – water works best – and avoid strenuous exercise,” said Peter Dimatteo, MD, Emergency Department physician at Norwood Hospital. “This is especially true if you are on any kind of cardiac medication or antihistamines.” Dimatteo also urged families and friends to check on anyone with chronic illnesses to help ensure that they are as cool and as comfortable as possible. Tips for Keeping Pets Safe As Temps Creep Near 100 Degrees

Heatstroke can be fatal for pets. The Humane Society of the United States reminds pet owners to make sure their dog gets plenty of water and to limit the intensity of exercise.

According to the National Weather Service, Norwood is on the cusp of a brutal, if brief, heat wave. The NWS is predicting a high temperature of 95 on Wednesday and 98 on Thursday. The following column was originally printed on July 22, 2011. The Humane Society of the United States offers the following tips for keeping your pets safe and cool during the extreme heat this week: Never leave your pets in a parked car. On a warm day, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly to dangerous levels. On an 85 degree day, for example, the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. Cooling Centers Extending Hours to Provide Heat Relief

Locations across town are extending hours as temperatures are forecasted to rise near 100 degrees this week.

Norwood officials have extended hours at multiple locations for residents to beat the heat this week. The Civic Center, 165 Nahatan St., will have extended hours today, closing at 9 p.m. It also will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. If residents plan to seek relief during extended hours on either day from 7 to 9 p.m., call (781) 762-0466. Outdoor pools also remain open Monday through Friday from 1 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. The Senior Center, 275 Prospect St., also is open today and tomorrow with extended hours from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. If residents plan on seeking relief here during extended hours from 4 to 9 p.m., call (781) 762-1201. Residents Urged to Stay Safe During Hotter Days

With the UV index climbing, local organizations are urging residents to stay aware and watch out for those more susceptible.

The National Weather Service is predicting temperatures in the low to mid-90s for the rest of this week. With cloudless skies and lots of sunshine, many area organizations are urging Norwood residents to be careful of their sun and UV exposure. The UV Index refers to the amount of ultraviolet radiation one may be exposed to on a particular day, and rates the level on a 1-11+ scale. According the website of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the UV Index provides a daily forecast of the expected risk of overexposure to the sun and takes into account clouds and other local conditions that affect the amount of UV radiation reaching the ground.
