The winter holidays are a time for celebration, and that means more cooking, home decorating, entertaining and an increased risk of fire due to heating equipment.

The Norwood Fire Department asks you to follow these safety tips for a safe holiday season! Holiday Decorating: Christmas Trees: Carefully decorating Christmas trees can help make your holidays safer. Candles: On average, a candle fire in the home is reported to a U.S. fire department every 34 minutes. More than half of all candle fires start when items that can burn, such as furniture, mattresses, bedding, curtains, or decorations, are too close to the candle. Norwood Fire Dept. Urges Safe Cooking This Thanksgiving

Tips for a safe turkey day from the Norwood Fire Department and the National Fire Protection Association.

Thanksgiving remains the leading day for cooking fires, with three times as many cooking fires as an average day, according to statistics by the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), which also found that cooking equipment fires are still the leading cause of U.S. home fires and fire injuries, and the third leading cause of fire deaths. “Thanksgiving is a holiday of feasting, but it’s also a day of intense cooking, when stovetops and ovens are working overtime,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of communications. “These culinary activities bring an increased risk of fire particularly when people are trying to prepare several dishes while entertaining friends and family."
