Selectmen Notes: Savers Thrift Store to Come to Rte. 1

Savers Secondhand License Approved for Rte. 1 Location Savers Thrift Stores representatives appeared before the Board of Selectmen Tuesday night to request a secondhand dealers license for a Norwood location on Rte. 1. The store - which was founded in 1954 and specializes in secondhand clothing - is looking to take up the location at 560 Boston-Providence Turnpike, where SYMS was previously. David Manoogian, an Attleboro lawyer working for Savers in this case, said that Norwood has always been a town that the business wanted to be in. "Hopefully it'll be a productive relationship between the Town of Norwood and Savers," he said. "Personally I don't think it's a part of my vision for Rte. 1," Selectman Paul Bishop said. Selectmen Notes: Chief Brooks Report, Retired Crossing Guard Honored

Anti-Crime Success, School Safety in Chief Brook's Report Chief William Brooks started his report to the Board of Selectmen Tuesday night that the good news that Officer David Eysie has been promoted to Detective. Brooks complimented Eysie's recent work and said the promotion was "very well received by the rest of the squad." The Chief highlighted several police actions over the past month, including two armed robberies, several drug arrests and a breaking and entering thwarted by the Norwood Police Anti-Crime Unit. Brooks said that particular unit is a plainclothes patrol and surveillance assignment, with officers in casual dress and non-descript vehicles. Selectmen Notes: Sex Offender Living Near School, Update on Skating Rink Committee

Resident Voices Concern Over Sex Offender Living Near School The Board of Selectmen received an e-mail letter from a resident regarding a sex offender living near St. Catherine's School. Selectman Paul Bishop said that he had spoken with the Police Department, and made a motion to refer the correspondence to the Chief of Police so he can speak to the resident. Selectman William Plasko added that the town tries to regulate these things as much as possible. The motion to refer the letter to the Police Chief was passed unanimously.   Board Considers Proposed Upland Woods Development The Massachusetts Housing Partnership, submitted a request for comments from the Board on a proposed Upland Woods development. Selectmen Notes: Board Approves $5K for Historical Register Application for Highland Chapel

Board Votes to Approve $5K for Historical Register Application for Highland Chapel Department of Public Works director Mark Ryan appeared before the Board of Selectmen to request $5,000 to go toward an application for the chapel at the Highland Cemetery to be put on the state Historical Register. Ryan said that the chapel has fallen into disrepair, and that according to a study of the building done by the original designing firm, it could cost around $675,000 to repair. The firm, Ryan said, has a very personal interest in the chapel, and recommended putting it on the historical register. Doing so could allow the Town to obtain grants to rehabilitate it as a historical building. "I think it's time now that we do update," Selectman Paul …
