Opinion: Senator Rush on Memorial Day

A Memorial Day op/ed from State Senator Mike Rush.

This Memorial Day, citizens will take time to honor and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country: our nation’s veterans, and those members of the military who currently serve. Observances include solemn ceremonies, parades, and moments of silence so that we, as citizens, can say thank you and be mindful of the sacrifice and selfless service to our nation made by our veterans and their families. Memorial Day was federally recognized in 1971 to recognize all veterans, but it was originally known as Decoration Day, with the purpose of remembering those who died in the Civil War.  Army General John Logan issued General Order #11 in 1868, which called upon Americans to honor the fallen and their families: Let us …

Memorial Day: Who Will You Be Honoring?

We'd like to start collecting your photos, stories and remembrances of those who served and died.

Monday we will take a break from work and school to recognize Memorial Day. Historically, it started as Decoration Day, a fixed holiday on May 30, so named in 1868 as a day to break from the routine of life and honor our Civil War dead by decorating their graves. Much about how we celebrate this day has changed over time, including when we celebrate, and even the holiday's name. Too many of us take for granted the opportunity to remember those who have served and died. We sleep in, plan a picnic or barbecue, head to the beach or the mountains for some relaxation and family time. And that's all good. But especially now that so many of us here at home understand, first-hand, the sacrifice made by those who serve in the U.S. military, we …

Letter to the Editor: State Sen. Rush Remembers the Fallen Heroes

State. Sen. Michael Rush is currently serving in Iraq.

I want to take this opportunity to wish you, your family, and the citizens of the Suffolk and Norfolk District good health and peace of mind on this Memorial Day. Originally known as Decoration Day – to encourage the practice of adorning the graves of the fallen – it is a time to remember those who have served, those currently serving and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we may enjoy our freedom. I would especially like to say thank you to those who have the toughest job in the military, our military spouses and families. As you may know, I am writing this letter from a combat zone 5,810 miles away while I am serving on active duty with United States Forces in Iraq.  As a lieutenant in the Navy Reserves who has been …

Patch Recipes: Potato Salad

A summer staple for this Memorial Day weekend.

It’s that time of year when calendars are jam-packed with events. You probably have a combination of graduation, wedding, shower or first communion invites hanging on your fridge and you’re sandwiching all those events between sports events. Maybe you’ve even been asked to bring something or you’ll offer to make something for a special upcoming event? Well, if you do bring something, tell them you’re bringing the potato salad. If you make the recipe, you’ll have enough for a family for two nights, but you can easily double it (half for a party, half for dinners). Enjoy! Potato Salad: 2 teaspoons celery seed 3 tablespoons vinegar 7 cooked large peeled potatoes cut in ¾ inch pieces (cook until fork tender) 2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon …
