The first night of Norwood's Special Town Meeting was dominated by a discussion of article 5, regarding feasibility and traffic studies on the proposed hockey rink project.
Of the 10 articles discussed during the first night of Norwood's Special Town Meeting on Thursday, it was article 5 - a motion by the Board of Selectmen for the members to approve the expenditure of a $45,000 donation on traffic and financial feasibility studies on a proposed hockey rink location - that garnered the most attention. After nearly two hours of discussion, the members approved the article. Representatives from the Recreation in Norwood Committee began the conversation with a presentation on the process up to this point and their findings regarding the specific proposed location (the current location of the tennis courts at the Coakley Middle School), the benefits to the town and the management of the rink. There are 22 articles on the approved Special Town Meeting warrant for Nov. 15.
On Nov. 15 there will be a Special Town Meeting to discuss and vote on the 22 articles on the Town Meeting Warrant which was approved by the Board of Selectmen last week. Article 5 on the warrant addresses the feasibility and traffic studies on the proposed Norwood hockey rink. While the article calls for the appropriation of funds for the study, at last week's Selectmen meeting the Recreation in Norwood Committee (RINC) presented the town with a donation check for $45,000 - which should cover the expense of both studies. Selectmen Chair Michael Lyons said at the meeting that the vote of the Town Meeting members on this article would be basically conceptual, to find out whether or not the community would approve of the project in general. …

Briefs from the Board of Selectmen meeting, Tuesday, Oct. 9.
Chief Brooks and Selectmen Encourage Citizens to Call in Suspicious Activity Chief William G. Brooks III, of the Norwood Police Department, appeared before the Board of Selectmen Tuesday night with the monthly report of his department's activity. Brooks highlighted a recent case where a home invasion incident was discovered after a concerned citizen called to report suspicious activity in her neighborhood. Because of the timely call, Brooks said, police were able to get on scene earlier than they might have been if the break-in had been discovered only when the residents returned home. The officers found a latent print at the scene and were able to connect it to a Dorchester male who was already in the system. He was arrested and in …
An open letter to the citizens of Norwood from the Recreation in Norwood Committee, regarding the proposed hockey rink and their meeting on Oct. 1
We members of RINC (Recreation in Norwood Committee) want to thank all the Norwood residents who turned out on October 1st to have a conversation regarding a future skating rink in Norwood. We particularly want to thank the South Norwood Committee for hosting our meeting that night. As many in the community already know, our RINC group has worked for several years – and has conducted an exhaustive site search – to find a home for a skating rink in Norwood. With guidance from professionals in the rink building industry, rink architects, consultants from the State’s Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), and with the conceptual approval of both boards of Selectmen and School Committee, we have now concluded that the best location …

The plan includes more parking. Lots of times they advertize on the zamboni and that frays the cost of maintaining a zamboni. There are private rinks in Mass that must make a profit to exist so if the state is taking care of all of the upfront costs, how can Norwood not make money off a rink? Especially when the local families tell us they have to drive to Westborough or RI to get ice time. It …   more ›

Well, now we are getting down to business. Not monkey business. The rink is NOT a necessity. What is a necessity is implementing an educational plan that puts Norwood students in a superior academic program. This action results in a positive consequence; Norwood make the top 85 towns that quality for Advanced MCAS. Now, that is something to be proud of. I truly value the educaton I received and …   more ›
