Selectmen Notes: Board Hears Norwood Hospital Expansion Plan

Notes from Tuesday night's Board of Selectmen meeting in Norwood.

Norwood Hospital Presents Expansion Plan to the Board Several members of Norwood Hospital management attended the Norwood Board of Selectmen meeting Tuesday night at Town Hall to present tentative expansion plans for the hospital. "As we go through the plans you'll see that it's very much a worse in progress," said Emily Holliman, President of Norwood Hospital. "All the communication I've received is very positie and supportive," she continued. The plan doesn't involve expansion of the number of beds at the hospital, but does involve the creation of more rooms - with more private and semi-private rooms available to patients. Norwood Hospital Advises Residents to Stay Out of Heat

So far the hospital Emergency Department has not seen any increase in heat-related illness.

Despite temperatures in the mid- to high 90's Wednesday and Thursday, Norwood Hospital reported no increase in heat-related illnesses, but physicians still advised residents to stay out of the heat. “In general, the best advice we can give people during this heat wave is to stay out of the heat, as much as possible, keep hydrated – water works best – and avoid strenuous exercise,” said Peter Dimatteo, MD, Emergency Department physician at Norwood Hospital. “This is especially true if you are on any kind of cardiac medication or antihistamines.” Dimatteo also urged families and friends to check on anyone with chronic illnesses to help ensure that they are as cool and as comfortable as possible. Norwood Hospital was honored with an “A” Hospital Safety Score by The Leapfrog Group.

Norwood Hospital was honored with an “A” Hospital Safety Score by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. The Hospital Safety Score was calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel using publicly available data on patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections. U.S. hospitals were assigned an A, B, C, D, or F for their safety. Steward Norwood Hospital received the highest ranking from The Leapfrog Group for safety. The ratings reflect how safe a hospital is for its patients. Norwood Hospital Offering Pregnancy Presentations

The hospital will be offering two presentations this spring for local families thinking about getting pregnant, a press release from Norwood Hospital said.

For local couples preparing to start or expand their families, Norwood Hospital is offering special presentations twice this spring to answer their questions. The hospital’s five obstetricians and nurse leaders will be on hand to address common issues about pregnancy. The events will be held on Wednesday, April 25 and Thursday, May 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the hospital’s Abraham-Sieracki Conference Room. “Having a child is a very big decision. We are here to help women and their partners navigate some of the choices they have.
