State Fines Utilities Millions for 2011 Storm Responses

National Grid was fined nearly $19 million, the highest fine levied against utilities in Massachusetts.

The state on Tuesday ordered a total of $24.8 million in penalties to utility companies for their response to storms in 2011. Massachusetts Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rick Sullivan joined Department of Public Utilities (DPU) Chairman Ann Berwick and DPU commissioners today to announce the findings of the DPU’s investigation into responses to Tropical Storm Irene and the October 2011 snowstorm. Provided the penalties hold up, customers should see a reduction in their bill, though it is unclear how much, officials said.  National Grid faces the steepest penalty, at $18.725 million. Police Respond to 40 Calls of Downed Wires Due to Snow

Snow storm causes major problems for electricity, phone and cable.

As of 2:00 p.m. on Wedesday, the Norwood Police Department had responded to 40 calls of fallen wires in the town, including electricity, phone and cable. The first call occurred at 5:12 a.m., after the snow - predicted to bring about 9-13 inches of snow to Norwood throughout the day - began between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m. Police spokesman Kevin Grasso issued a statement Wednesday afternoon saying that the wires have been the major issue of the storm so far today, and that NPD as well as the fire department and Norwood Light are all responding. "At this moment we have not responded to any motor vehicle crashes today," Grasso wrote.
