Question of the Day

Question of the Day: Soccer and the U.S., Oil and Water?

With the U.S. Women's team coming so close to the World Cup title, it almost seemed to ignite soccer fever here. Will it stay?

We ask Norwood Patch readers a different question every weekday at noon. Questions could range from local decisions made by officials, to state issues, to national politics and entertainment. Whatever it is, we want to know what NORWOOD thinks! To answer, use our comments section below. It was what some have deemed heart-breaking and others have deemed a typical loss for the U.S. Women's World Cup team on Sunday, as they fell in the final round to Japan. Did they choke on the penalty kicks as some have claimed, or was Japan truly the better team? More importantly, was the soccer fever that swept the nation merely an echo of nationalism and patriotic pride, or was it that this country finally got excited about what for many "sports fans" is…

Doubt it. Asoccer captain in highschool, (Rivers class of '85) I grew-up at the time of the New England Tea-Men in the NASL. (best team: Pele's New York Cosmos) Not much excitement. Americans are into exciting sports. Spectators of Soccer are more into the "auxilliary aspects of spectatorship." (partying in the stands) These fan activities work in other parts of the world. We in here in America …   more ›

Haitian Boy Finds More Than Medical Help, Finds Family in Norwood

In U.S. for his medical care, the young Haitian soccer fan meets a sports hero touring Gillette Stadium, and finds a home away from home.

It is impossible to tell if the 6-year-old boy with enormous brown eyes peering out from the photo snapped eight years ago in his native Haiti is smiling.  The massive tumor disfiguring his face engulfs his upper lip, left eye and cheek, and cruelly twists his nose to the right side of his face. What is certain, however, is that at the time the picture was taken, in his remote, desperately impoverished corner of Haiti, the boy - Junior Jean Louis - couldn't have known that in just a few years' time he would be in the United States, happily touring Gillette Stadium with a professional soccer player, and that the majority of his tumor would be gone. "I was surprised that after my surgeries, I got to see this pretty place," Junior said of …

The Week in Review: Nov. 22-27

In case you missed it, here are the biggest stories of the past week.

Norwood Patch launched on Monday with a lot of local stories, including notes from last week's Board of Selectmen's meeting, the status of the new high school project and a profiles on a local artist, a Norwood soccer star and a Norwood-born author. Infrastructure failures have troubled the town over the past couple of weeks, as the Nov. 14 water main break and subsequent leak under Route 1 and Morse St. has forced that area to be under construction twice. The initial break had town officials looking to other areas of piping to prevent further avoidable issues. In the world of sports, we saw Norwood's "Chicks with Sticks" engage in a little friendly competition and the Norwood High School Mustangs defeat the Dedham Marauders in the 82nd …

Norwood High Honors Fall Athletes

Coaches praised their players for being hard workers and good role models.

The Norwood High School fall athletic teams held their annual Athletic Awards on Wednesday night at the Elks Club in Norwood, to honor each individual sports team and its top performers. Hosted by athletic director Brian McDonough, the event began on an inspirational note as McDonough introduced current Norwood High School substitue teacher Brian Gallo - a 2004 NHS graduate and former Mustang lacrosse player who decided to instead play football as a freshman at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. McDonough explained how Gallo was cut from the UMass football team that year, but that fact did not deter Gallo. He worked harder than ever to improve, and the following year he successfully earned a spot on the football team - a team that …

Bright Future for NHS Soccer Star

Norwood senior Cory Ryan will be kicking it at the University of Maryland next year.

Senior Cory Ryan grew up in the shadows of Norwood High School, where today she is a senior looking toward graduation and beyond. From the time she could walk, Ryan, the third in a four-kid family, was kicking a soccer ball around and she never stopped. This coming summer will be no different for Ryan - she will continue kicking a soccer ball around, with one major change: she will no longer be in the shadows of her Norwood neighbors' backyards, the high school or outlying town fields.  Instead, Ryan will transfer her amassed talents and skills, with scholarship to the University of Maryland, a rising powerhouse in NCAA Division I, women's soccer. "I was always watching my sister's games, if I wasn't playing on the sidelines (as a …
