Norwood Selectmen Notes: Board Discusses Upcoming Holiday Extravaganza, 'Strong Chief' Revocation

Briefs from Tuesday night's Norwood Board of Selectmen meeting.

Successful Fall for Recreation Dept., Looking Forward to Holiday Season Gerald Miller, Superintendent of the Norwood Recreation Department, addressed the board of selectmen at their Tuesday night meeting to deliver his monthly report. Miller said the Halloween season was great for the Recreation Department, including events such as pumpkin painting, parents' night out and the new "Trunk or Treat" event on Oct. 20 - which he described as an alternative to trick-or-treating. Miller said hundreds of kids showed up and, in the words of one of those kids, it was nice to have an excuse to wear their costumes again. "It was a huge success," he said. Ms. Bailey's request to have a resident of South Norwood on the RINC committee is again being excluded and denied. Whatever word used,tabled, on hold, etc., Plasko and the selectmen are not using any means of inclusive nor a spirit of cooperation. Norwood Town Meeting Votes to Rescind 'Strong Chief' Law

After a long discussion, the motion by the Norwood Board of Selectmen carried by a close vote of 88-79.

Third time was the charm for the Norwood Board of Selectmen in their motion to rescind the so-called "Strong Chief" law, as the Town Meeting members voted to pass the motion at Monday night's continuation of the Special Town Meeting. After an hour and a half of discussion and voting, the motion carried by a tight vote of 88-79. The article called for the town to revoke its acceptance of sections 42, 43 and 44 of chapter 48 of Massachusetts General Law, providing for the establishment of a fire department to be under the control of an officer to be known as the Chief of the Fire Department.
