Norwood Food Pantry Collecting Thanksgiving Donations

This is a busy time of year for area food pantries.

Thanksgiving is always one of the busiest times of the year at the Norwood Food Pantry.  “But this year, we’re expecting it to be even busier than usual,” says Ruth Taeger, the pantry’s Executive Director. “Due to the economy, the number of local families depending on us for a happy holiday has risen from 250 to 350. That’s a 40 percent increase in just one year!” To help make sure no neighbors in need go hungry at this special time of year, the pantry will be distributing turkey gift certificates. Volunteers are also preparing gift boxes including side dishes and desserts. “Any gifts of nonperishable food are also extremely welcome as we approach the holidays,” Taeger said. “Right now, we particularly need cold-weather favorites like …

The Week in Review: Nov. 22-27

In case you missed it, here are the biggest stories of the past week.

Norwood Patch launched on Monday with a lot of local stories, including notes from last week's Board of Selectmen's meeting, the status of the new high school project and a profiles on a local artist, a Norwood soccer star and a Norwood-born author. Infrastructure failures have troubled the town over the past couple of weeks, as the Nov. 14 water main break and subsequent leak under Route 1 and Morse St. has forced that area to be under construction twice. The initial break had town officials looking to other areas of piping to prevent further avoidable issues. In the world of sports, we saw Norwood's "Chicks with Sticks" engage in a little friendly competition and the Norwood High School Mustangs defeat the Dedham Marauders in the 82nd …

Mustangs Finish Strong

Norwood scores a victory in their final game of the season - the Thanskgiving Day match-up against rival Dedham.

Norwood Head Coach John Sarianides went into the last game of the season determined - calling it the Mustangs' own Super Bowl. This was the 82nd annual Thanksgiving day battle between the Mustangs and Marauders. Dedham won last year's game in the final minutes after a six-year Norwood victory run. The Mustangs have an all time record of 43-38-1 in this game. "Its a huge game," Sarianides told Patch earlier this week. "We're 2-8 - we need a win." When the Dedham Marauders scored a touchdown in the first possession of the Thursday's final showdown, a completed pass from quarterback Dan O'Conner to wide receiver Mike Ryan, the Mustangs answered immediately with a near 80-yard running touchdown from junior running back Andrew Alty. In the …

My Norwood

A Thanksgiving Dedication

How my grandparents' decision to move to Norwood changed my life.

The last time we met I told you how I came to love Norwood before I even lived here. However I didn't always feel that way. There was a time when I thought of Norwood as a thief, stealing away two of the most important people in my life. It was 1978, I was five years old and again I was driving to Norwood with my mother and grandparents. This time, however, we weren't going to Hanlon's or Sanko Toys. We were going to see the new house my grandparents were moving to. On this day, Norwood wasn't an enchanted, magical place. It was a place that made me sad. My grandparents were everything to me and they had never lived more than a stone's throw away from me. Sitting in the back of my grandfather's Buick, the thirty-minute ride from Roslindale…

Local Pub Opens Doors for Unofficial Reunion

The Thanksgiving Eve tradition, Norwood-style.

While Thanksgiving Day is about gathering with family, for many, Thanksgiving Eve - an unofficial holiday of its own - is about gathering with friends, reconnecting and reminiscing. For Norwood residents, Concannon's Village has been home to the unofficial Norwood High School reunion, for as long as anyone can remember, or at least the past twenty plus years. A local bar and pub, Concannon's also has a function hall which hosts many local events. On the night before Thanksgiving, the function hall is opened to all the Norwood residents taking part in the yearly gathering. Function manager Joanne Donoian said it all began to fill that need. "We knew people wanted a place to meet and we could provide it - a big room, lots of parking, music …
