Former School Committee Chair Mark Joseph Pays $5,000 Civil Penalty for Conflict of Interest Law Violations

Joseph admitted to violating G.L. c. 268A, the conflict of interest law, by having school employees transport surplus cafeteria equipment to his privately owned restaurant in the summer of 2011.

Editor's Note: The following information is from a press release from the State Ethics Commission. The State Ethics Commission has approved a Disposition Agreement in which former Norwood School Committee Chairman Mark Joseph was forced to pay a $5,000 penalty for violating Conflict of Interest laws, a press release stated Tuesday. Joseph admitted to violating G.L. c. 268A, the conflict of interest law, by having school employees transport surplus cafeteria equipment to his privately owned restaurant in the summer of 2011, during the transfer from the old high school to the new building. Pursuant to the agreement, Joseph paid a $5,000 civil penalty, and also reimbursed the Town of Norwood $511.76 for the costs of using public school …

Town Meeting Votes to Reduce School Committee to Five

Those in favor said this is not a reaction to previous troubles with committee members.

On Monday night, the Norwood Town Meeting members voted to reduce the size of the School Committee from seven to five members in the next two elections. During the discussion, those in favor noted that this motion was not in reaction to the recent issues and resignations among the committee - specifically the allegations against former members Mark Joseph and William Plasko Jr. With the motion passing, there will be one seat available on the committee for the 2012 elections with two members' terms expiring, reducing the board to six. The same will be true of the 2013 elections, reducing the board to five for the 2013-2014 school year. Norwood School Committee Statement Regarding Mark Joseph Resignation

A meeting of the Norwood School Committee was scheduled yesterday after Superintendent James Hayden alleged that committee chair Mark Joseph had organized the illegal transfer of kitchen equipment from the old Norwood High School to a local business rather than the new high school. The allegations were reported to the Norwood Police Department. An ongoing investigation into the propriety of Joseph's actions is currently underway.
