The Massachusetts State Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit was called in for a grenade found in the lot of the Living Waters Church on Walpole Street on Sunday night.
The following is a release from the Norwood Police Department: At approximately 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27 the Norwood Police, assisted by Norwood Fire Department, responded to a call reporting an Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) in the parking lot of Living Water’s Church on Walpole Street. A nearby resident had located a grenade in a family member’s apartment and moved it outside to a safe area. Officers Baguma, Lyden and Wennerstrand set up a perimeter to protect the scene. They were able to identify the ordnance as an MK 2 “pineapple” style grenade. The Massachusetts State Police (MSP) Explosive Ordnance Disposal was notified. A suspect with a silver semi-automatic handgun reportedly demanded money from an employee at the Mobil Mart on Washington St. before fleeing the scene.
The following is taken from a report by the Norwood Police Department: Between 3 and 4 a.m. Monday the Norwood Police Communication Center received a telephone call from an alarm company reporting a panic alarm at 499 Washington Street - which is the Mobil Mart. Officer James Mahoney was first on scene and spoke with an employee who stated the store had been robbed at gunpoint. It is reported that the suspect came into the store and demanded cash from the cash register. Once the suspect received the cash from the employee he fled on foot in an unknown direction. Norwood police reported the initial reports that the car was stolen in Norwood were mistaken.
According to Norwood police, an abandoned vehicle found crashed off the road in Boston this morning was allegedly taken by the owner's daughter, not stolen as originally reported. Scanner reports this morning said that the vehicle had been found at 152 Turtle Pond Parkway and Massachusetts State Police were on the scene. Reports indicated the vehicle was stolen this morning in Norwood. Norwood Police spokesman Kevin Grasso told Patch that the incident would be going in report as a using without authority rather than larceny. "The vehicle was allegedly taken by the daughter of the owner. The report does not go into any more detail as to why she involved the police," Grasso stated.
