Norwood Fire Department: 'Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery'

The Norwood Fire Department reminds residents to check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors this weekend when you turn back the clocks.

Sunday, Nov. 4 is the end of Daylight Savings Time and the Norwood Fire Department would like to remind residents to “Change your Clock, Change your Batteries.” Although smoke alarms are present in 96 percent of American homes, 19 percent do not work, mostly because of dead or missing batteries. This means roughly 25 million homes are at risk because of non-working smoke alarms and an additional 4.5 million homes are at risk by not having smoke detectors. To save lives and prevent needless injuries, the Norwood Fire Department actively supports the “Change Your Clock, Change Your Batteries” campaign sponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs. The program urges all Americans to adopt a simple, life saving, habit: Changing …

TELL US: Would You Support the 'Strong Chief' Law Being Rescinded?

The Board of Selectmen has discussed putting an article before the Town Meeting members on rescinding the 'Strong Chief' statute - what do you think?

At last week's Board of Selectmen meeting, the Board discussed bringing an article to the Town Meeting on Nov. 15 to rescind the "strong chief" statute in Norwood. The "strong chief" law in Massachusetts gives the fire chief sole control over hiring and firing in a department, as well as all fire department operations. According to the Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 48, Section 42: Towns accepting the provisions of this section... may establish a fire department to be under the control of an officer to be known as the chief of the fire department.... He shall have full and absolute authority in the administration of the department, shall make all rules and regulations for its operation, shall report to the selectmen from time to time …

I feel we should absolutely keep the strong chief law. I feel that a fire department should be run by a person who is trained in firefighting, fire prevention, knows what to look for in new recruits and is not made to feel political pressure from a town official to change any decisions he/she feels necessary. Perhaps it's time to look into changing the police department so they are also led by a …   more ›

Local 1631 To the Citizens of Norwood, We, the Norwood Firefighters Local 1631 are writing to address the recent statements made by the editor of a local newspaper. It has long been our policy to not be baited by unsubstantiated personal views and speculation but, we can no longer remain silent. Your firefighters take great pride and continue to respond 24 hours a day 365 days a year to any emergency in town with unwavering commitment and dedication keeping life safety and property preservation as our top priorities. This individual would lead you to believe that your Fire Department is dysfunctional, lacking structure and has no one in charge…

Thanks for your insightful letter. I'm not surprised by your comments regarding the management of the town and its budget; many decisions made by our appointed and elected officials have been made with more regard to ego, fiscal irresponsibility, and bad advice. In my view, the people mentioned seem to handle poor decisions by using public money to sue in court to defend their actions rather than…   more ›
