Recently, you may have noticed a new flag flying with the American Flag at the Norwood Fire Department. The flag being flown is the American Service Flag. The flag or banner is defined as a white field with a red border, with a blue star for each family member serving in the Armed Forces of the United States during any period of war or hostilities in which the Armed Forces of the United States are engaged. These flags were first used in World War I, with subsequent standardization and codification by the end of World War II. They were not popular during the Vietnam War, but have come back into use. The Norwood Fire Department responded to 113 incidents during the last week, between Monday Feb. 11 and Sunday, Feb. 17. The following reports were among those calls: Monday, Feb. 11 5:03 p.m. - Gasoline or other flammable liquid spill reported on Rose Court. 8:11 p.m. - A power line was reported down on Providence Highway. Wednesday, Feb. 13 5:04 p.m. - A power line was reported down on Savin Avenue. Thursday, Feb. 14 12:27 p.m. - A natural gas leak was reported on Railroad Avenue. 3:39 p.m. - An odor of smoke was reported on Nichols Street.
The department wishes to thank local residents for their efforts in helping keeping the town safe by digging out hydrants in town.

Editor's Note: The following was submitted to Norwood Patch by the Norwood Fire Department. The Norwood Fire Department last week targeted high-risk areas in town which needed to have the hydrant/water supplies accesible for fire personnel. Risk areas included elderly housing complexes, nursing homes, apartment complexes and schools. The fire department always encourages the community to clear nearby hydrants. Last week's survey indicated that many neighborhood hydrants have been cleared; the NFD thanks you for your efforts in helping keep the community safe!

Thursday, Feb. 7 1:39 p.m. - Fire crews responded to a reported building fire at Concannon's on on Lenox Street. Friday, Feb. 8 8:09 a.m. - Crews responded to a gas leak on University Avenue. 5:05 p.m. - A power line was reported down on Rock Street. The following was submitted by Norwood Fire Department Spokesman George Morrice. The Norwood Fire Department responded to a reported building fire at Concannon's Village early Thursday afternoon. The call came in at 1:39 p.m. for smoke and fire coming from Concannons. Firefighters arrived within two minutes to find fire issuing from the wood shingle facade of the building. Firefighters quickly attacked the fire with a 2-inch handline and had the fire contained by 1:49 p.m. Crews were able to determine that the fire had not spread to the interior or attic space of the building. The fire is under investigation but determination has not been made to the cause. No one was injured in the fire and a damage estimate was given of $3,500.

The following was submitted by the Norwood Fire Department: The Norwood Fire Department would like to introduce its newest member Firefighter Jack Farrell. Jack is a Norwood native who grew up on Pleasant Street and is the son of John and JoAnn Farrell. He attended St. Catherine's and Xaverian, graduated from Norwood High School in 2002 and went on to Wentworth Institute of Technology. Jack is an EMT and is currently in Paramedic school. Farrell lives in Norwood with his wife Stacey. The Norwood Fire Department wishes Jack the best in his career in public service as a Norwood Firefighter.
