Norwood Firefighters Handle Dumpster Blaze at Hospital

The cause of the fire is still undetermined but an estimate of the damage is in the $15,000 range.

The following is from the Norwood Fire Department: The quick response and work of the Norwood Fire Department prevented disaster last Wednesday evening at Norwood Hospital.  The call came in at 9:07 p.m. for a dumpster fire at Norwood Hospital at Washington Street and Hoyle Street. Fire Captain Kevin Romines quickly located the outside fire in the hospital loading dock area on East Hoyle Street. Apparatus arrived within three minutes and were confronted with a large rollable dumpster that was fully involved with fire rolling up the side of the hospital building. Equally as dangerous was the fire’s close proximity to a group of large liquid oxygen tanks located on the property. A quick, aggressive attack by E-4 crew quickly had the majority…

House Fire on East Cross Early Saturday Caused $20K in Damage

Norwood firefighters responded to a house fire Saturday morning, which was likely caused by lightning.

Norwood firefighters responded to a house fire on East Cross St. over the weekend that caused an estimated $20,000 in damage, Norwood Fire spokesman George Morrice said in an email Monday. Firefighters received the call early Saturday morning, in the midst of a thunderstorm that set off multiple alarms around town. No one was injured in the fire, which was on the exterior of the home at the meter box and service entrance wire locations, Morrice said. The fire was likely caused by lightning from the storm. Alarms started coming in at roughly 2:30 a.m., Morrice said, due to multiple lightning strikes across town. "An apartment complex, a Rte. 1 hotel and Guild Medical all had alarm activations," his email statement said. "Fire apparatus were…

Your firefighters take great pride and continue to respond 24 hours a day 365 days a year to any emergency in town with unwavering commitment and dedication keeping life safety and property preservation as our top priorities. This individual would lead you to believe that your Fire Department is dysfunctional, lacking structure and has no one in charge…

Thanks for your insightful letter. I'm not surprised by your comments regarding the management of the town and its budget; many decisions made by our appointed and elected officials have been made with more regard to ego, fiscal irresponsibility, and bad advice. In my view, the people mentioned seem to handle poor decisions by using public money to sue in court to defend their actions rather than…   more ›

Apartment Fire Kept at Bay by Boy's Quick Thinking

Norwood Firefighters were made aware of the fire by a young boy who pulled a manual alarm in the apartment complex on Dean St.

The quick thinking of a young boy in pulling a fire alarm may have prevented disaster at the Stonebridge Apartments on Dean St. Tuesday evening, Norwood Fire officials said. Norwood Fire spokesman George Morrice said firefighters responded to a fire in one of the second floor apartments just after 9 p.m. Tuesday. A mattress and some clothing had been ignited, possibly by coming in contact with a goose neck reading lamp, in the bedroom of an apartment at the rear of the building. A manual pull alarm was activated by a young boy living on the first floor of the complex. "A quick application of water and removal of the mattress and clothing put an end to the potentially dangerous situation," Morrice's statement said. "No one was injured in …
