Brief notes from Tuesday night's Norwood Board of Selectmen meeting.
Recreation Superintendent Talks Norwood Day Success, Upcoming Events Superintendent of the Norwood Recreation Department Gerald Miller attended Tuesday night's Board of Selectmen meeting to give a monthly report to the Board. Miller started out by noting the success of last weekend's Norwood Day festivities, including the fireworks Friday and Saturday's fair on the Town Common. "It's just a great day," Miller said. "Norwood Day has become a tradition that I never envisioned." The annual presentation of the Ann Lydon Volunteer of the Year award also happened Saturday, with Peggy Thorn this year's winner. Miller said Thorn is someone you always see helping at local events. With Norwood Day behind them, the Recreation Department is now …

The annual Foam Day continues to be a summer favorite among Norwood children.
For over 25 years the Norwood Recreation Department has been teaming up with the Norwood Fire Department to bring mounds of suds-filled fun to the children of Norwood with the annual Foam Day. Norwood Firefighter Paul Ronco noted three of Norwood's newest fire fighters, Pat Moloney, Mike Chisholm and Steve O'Malley participated in the event for the first time, filling the field behind the Coakley Middle School Friday morning.

Annual Foam and Mud Day marked the end of summer for Norwood families.
The Norwood Recreation Department closed out a successful 2011 summer season with the annual Foam and Mud Day held Friday morning at Father Mac's. Camp Director Sara Ryan estimated approximately 300 children were in attendance between the three camps - Father Mac's, South Camp, Junior Playground - and the public. The annual event has been a tradition for over 35 years with mud day preceding foam day, Ryan said. Ryan wanted to extend a “big thank you” to the Norwood DPW for excavating the mud pit Thursday and the Norwood Fire Department for providing the foamy fun. Youngsters from the general public and Junior Playground campers were the first to dive into the foam while Sparky, the Norwood Fire Department mascot, sprayed the crowd with …

With a little help from friends and the Civic I might just survive those, "Mommy, I'm bored" days.
It was a glorious long weekend here in Norwood. Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial beginning of summer, and everything about this weekend screamed it. Even the air smelled “summery.” A perfect mixture of sunscreen, fresh-cut grass and steak cooking on my neighbor's grill drifted into my yard Saturday afternoon as I watched a picture perfect summer scene.
