In the wake of the Newtown school shooting, what safety plans should Norwood schools put in place? Should they increase security? Tell us in the comment section.
Now a week after the tragic school shooting in Newtown, Conn., school districts across the country are reviewing safety measures and procedures. "We have practiced throughout the year our emergency procedures and will continue to review all our safety plans to do everything we can to provide safe schools in cooperation with the Norwood Police and Fire Departments," Norwood Superintendent James Hayden wrote in a letter to local parents last weekend. We want to know what, if anything, you think should be done locally after this tragedy. Should Norwood increase security at schools? Change any existing plans for emergencies? The spring 2012 MCAS scores were released this week.
The Massachusetts Department of Education recently released MCAS scores from spring 2012 that show Norwood students on the whole out-performing the state's numbers. With all the grades and all schools combined, 74 percent of Norwood students scored "Advanced" or "Proficient" in English, 62 percent in Mathematics and 57 percent in Science and Tech. Statewide 69 percent of students scored in the top two categories for English, 59 percent in Mathematics and 54 percent in Science and Tech. The start of school is just over a week away in Norwood, with the first day of classes scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 6. Above is the school bus schedule for all Norwood schools, with times and stops listed. The bus schedule in town includes 2 busses to the Callahan School, 4 to the Balch School, 3 to the Cleveland School, 2 to the Oldham School, 2 to the Prescott School, 6 to St. Catherine's, 13 to the Coakley Middle School, and 9 to the High School.

There's only about a month left until the start of classes for Norwood High School students - and if you've spent the last two months ignoring your summer reading assignments then it's time to get going! Here are the details on all summer reading assignments for NHS English classes: Grade 9, 10, 11 Assignment: Write a Character Journal In addition to reading the book during the summer, students are also required to write a character journal. Choose one character from the novel, either a main character or a peripheral character, and write from his or her point of view. Do not merely summarize the plot.
